'21st PGA Tour victory, one more than someone else' - Majestic McIlroy defends Canadian Open title

RORY MCILROY HIT a sublime final-round 62 to retain his RBC Canadian Open title.

McIlroy started the day in share of the lead with Tony Finau but hit 10 birdies in his eight-under-par round — including a front-nine 29 — to finish two shots clear of the American on 19 under.

Finau closed with a 64, as did his and McIlroy’s playing partner Justin Thomas, who was third on 15 under.

Shane Lowry, meanwhile, shot a four-under-par final round to finish nine under for the tournament, tied for 10th.

While soaking in his victory, surrounded by boisterous Canadian fans on the 18th, McIlroy took a not-so-subtle swipe at Aussie golfing great Greg Norman, CEO of the Saudi-backed breakaway LIV tour, as he celebrated his 21st PGA Tour victory.

“It’s incredible,” McIlroy said. “Playing with Tony and JT today, two of the best players in the world and all of us playing the way we did… I mean, I think the worst score of the group was, whatever, six under par?

“Yeah, this is a day I’ll remember for a long, long time.

21st PGA Tour win, one more than someone else: that gave me a little bit of extra incentive today and I’m happy to get it done.

Of his recently promising form, McIlroy said: “I think after Covid and everything, I needed a complete reset. Sort of re-dedicated myself to the game a little bit, sort of realised what made me happy. And this makes me happy.”
