WATCH: Limerick Youth Service awarded for generosity

LIMERICK Youth Service have been named Limerick Persons of the Month.

The service strives to help young people by providing them with opportunities to grow, learn and develop personally.

It was founded in 1973 by Sr Joan Bowles who “set about looking at how we can support young people from a variety of different communities from across the city and county. That service has developed over the years and we have a fully developed youth training centre. It is a wonderful service to be involved in.”

Limerick Youth Service has 500 volunteers and nearly 100 employees across the service.

Fiona O’Grady, Chief Executive Officer, Limerick Youth Service accepted the award on behalf of all involved, saying; “It is an honour to be accepting this award on behalf of the service. I am here representing the broad range of people that are involved in Limerick Youth Service, young people, volunteers, our board and I am delighted to be here on their behalf.”

The service celebrated its golden jubilee (50 years) with a birthday party and reunion for all its current and past members on Friday, September 22 in the Strand Hotel.

“We have run a large number of events already this year to celebrate. We have had a number of youth festivals in communities around the city. Earlier in the year we had a conference on youth mental health in Thomond Park. There will be lots happening to celebrate throughout the year.”

Looking to the future Fiona said; “We are all about helping young people reach their full potential. Young people are our future, our future voters, our future employees and it is all about how we can support them to make meaningful and worthwhile contributions to society.”

The Limerick Person of the Month award is sponsored by the Limerick Leader, media agency Southern, and the Clayton Hotel.
