Progressive metal band Dream Theater to play in Tel Aviv

The progressive metal band Dream Theater will return to Israel on Saturday to perform at Tel Aviv’s Hangar 11.

Tel Aviv is the band’s first stop in its 2023 Top of the World Tour.

Dream Theater won a 2022 Grammy for Best Metal Performance for the song “The Alien” off of its most recent album, “A View from the Top of the World.”

The album was written and recorded in the band’s studio during the pandemic after the quintet was forced to cancel the remainder of its 2020 tour.

It was Dream Theater’s 15th studio album, but the band approaches every album like it’s their first, said vocalist James LaBrie.

“It’s been such a great ride, but we’re not going to stop,” he said.

Known for their epic, long songs and use of biblical images, band members have said that words associated with religion and the Bible evoke powerful imagery that has sometimes ended up in their music.

They also credit musical influences, such as Rush, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and Metallica, as part of their core sound.

Dream Theater’s current lineup includes LaBrie, John Petrucci on guitar,  keyboard player Jordan Rudess, bassist John Myung and percussionist Mike Mangini.

They formed the band in 1985 under the name Majesty, with Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. They ended up dropping out of school to concentrate on the band that would eventually become Dream Theater.

Dream Theater has sold more than 15 million albums and has performed in Israel four times, most recently in 2019.

The Saturday night show is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. and tickets are available from Raven Metal.
