Unarmed Palestinian who allegedly lunged at troops shot dead in West Bank

A Palestinian man was shot dead after allegedly lunging at Israeli soldiers near the northern West Bank city of Nablus on Friday afternoon, local officials and media reports said.

A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces declined requests to comment, saying the incident was still being looked into.

According to local security officials, a Palestinian man exited a taxi that had arrived from Nablus, walked up toward soldiers stationed near a bus stop and allegedly lunged at them.

The Kan public broadcaster said the troops first shot into the air, and after he continued to refuse calls to halt, they fired two shots at him, killing the suspect. The report said a suicide note was found on his body.

Other unconfirmed reports by Hebrew-language media said the suspect attempted to grab a soldier’s gun.

The Palestinian Red Cresent confirmed the man had died. He was not immediately named.

The incident came as tensions remain high in the West Bank, with the IDF pressing on with an anti-terror offensive to deal with a series of attacks that left 31 people in Israel dead in 2022, and seven more in an attack last weekend.

The IDF’s operation has netted more than 2,500 arrests in near-nightly raids. It also left 171 Palestinians dead in 2022, and another 36 since the beginning of the year, many of them while carrying out attacks or during clashes with security forces, though some were uninvolved civilians.
