Blue-Haired Clown Seth Bloom, Master of Wordless Comedy, Dies at 49

Seth Bloom, a blue-haired clown known for his wordless comedy and social circus initiatives, passed away on August 2, 2024, in Poughkeepsie, New York. He was 49 years old. His wife and performance partner, Christina Gelsone, confirmed that Bloom died by suicide.

Bloom's journey in circus arts began in his teenage years in the Washington suburbs. Initially a juggler, he evolved into a master of silent comedy, a skill that allowed him to transcend language and cultural barriers. This ability proved invaluable as he performed in over 25 countries alongside Gelsone, his purple-haired clown partner from Texas.

Together, they formed the Acrobuffos, gaining recognition for their innovative performances. Their repertoire included interactive street shows like "Waterbombs" and the acclaimed "Air Play," a visually stunning production featuring floating objects. "Air Play," developed in 2014 at the New Victory Theater in Manhattan, showcased Bloom's ability to transform ordinary items into objects of beauty.

Bloom's work extended beyond entertainment. In 2003, he traveled to Afghanistan, marking the beginning of his involvement in social circus programs. As the artistic director for the Mobile Mini Circus for Children, he developed shows that combined circus skills with educational messages about health and social issues.

Christina Gelsone reflected on their experiences:

"is to take ordinary objects and transform them into objects of beauty."

Our interest as clowns

Bloom's background was as diverse as his performances. Born on January 4, 1975, in Washington, D.C., he spent his early years in various countries due to his father's Foreign Service work. He graduated from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College in 1993, later earning degrees from Wesleyan University and the London International School of Performing Arts.

Throughout his career, Bloom demonstrated a unique ability to connect with audiences. His performances were not just about laughter but also about inspiring awe and expanding hearts. This approach was evident in his work with refugees and war victims, using circus arts as a tool for education and healing.

Tragically, Bloom's career was cut short by debilitating foot pain that began about three years ago. His last performance was in Saudi Arabia in December 2021, after which he was forced to stop performing due to his condition.

Seth Bloom's legacy in the world of clowning and social circus will be remembered for its innovation, compassion, and ability to bring joy to audiences worldwide. His work serves as a testament to the power of laughter and beauty in expanding hearts and minds, even in the most challenging circumstances.
