Gas Station Blast in Rural Idaho Leaves Two Critical, Two Missing

A devastating explosion rocked the small community of Cardiff in Clearwater County, Idaho, on Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred at the Atkinson Distributing gas station, resulting in severe injuries and potential loss of life.

Jeff Adams, a manager at Atkinson Distributing, confirmed that two employees were airlifted to a specialized burn center in Seattle, where they remain in critical condition. The use of air ambulances highlights the severity of their injuries and the challenges of providing emergency medical care in remote areas.

Idaho State Fire Marshal Knute Sandahl reported that two additional individuals were transported to local hospitals, though the extent of their injuries remains unclear. Tragically, two others are believed to have been inside the building at the time of the explosion and are presumed deceased.

The blast, which occurred around 3 p.m., created a debris field spanning approximately two city blocks. Sandahl described the scene as "devastating," noting that structures beyond the gas station were also affected. This extensive damage underscores the power of the explosion and the potential dangers associated with fuel storage and distribution facilities.

"We'd like to extend our prayers to everybody, and thank the first responders and everybody who turned out to try to help. We very much appreciate it."

Jeff Adams stated:

The cause of the explosion remains unknown. Investigators, including deputy fire marshals and a special agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), are currently examining the site. Their work is complicated by the remote location and lack of cell service in the area.

Cardiff, an unincorporated community in Clearwater County, relies heavily on the logging industry. The gas station, which includes a small convenience store, operates seasonally to serve the needs of workers and residents in this rural mountain region.

As the investigation continues, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential hazards associated with fuel handling and the importance of safety measures in such facilities. The explosion has deeply affected the tight-knit community of Cardiff and the surrounding areas of Clearwater County, which has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1911.

The coming days will be crucial as authorities work to determine the cause of this tragic event and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
