In a recent development, the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that occurred at a prosecutor's office in Kabul, Afghanistan. The attack, which took place on Monday, has resulted in conflicting reports regarding the number of casualties.
According to Taliban officials, the blast claimed six lives and left 13 individuals injured. However, ISIS, in a statement released through their news outlet Amaq, asserted that the death toll was significantly higher, claiming 45 fatalities. This discrepancy in reported casualties highlights the challenges in obtaining accurate information in the aftermath of such incidents.
The attack targeted employees and investigators as they were leaving work in the southwestern Qala Bakhtiar neighborhood of Kabul. ISIS stated that the assault was carried out in retaliation for individuals detained in Taliban-run prisons.
Since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, Afghanistan has witnessed an increase in extremist activities. These attacks have often targeted Taliban patrols and members of the country's Shiite minority, exacerbating the already fragile security situation in the nation.
The humanitarian organization Emergency NGO reported treating six injured men at their surgical center in Kabul, with two requiring major surgery. Dejan Panic, the group's director, provided this information, underlining the severity of the injuries sustained in the attack.
"We are investigating the incident and will provide further details as they become available."
It's worth noting that Afghanistan has been grappling with conflict for over four decades, significantly impacting its population of approximately 38 million people. The country's diverse ethnic makeup, including Pashtuns, Tajiks, and Hazaras, adds complexity to its social and political landscape.
