Rio Tinto Explores Pongamia Seed Oil for Renewable Diesel in Australia

Rio Tinto, a global mining leader, has unveiled plans to establish seed farms in Australia to investigate the potential of Pongamia seed oil as a renewable diesel feedstock. This initiative, announced approximately one year ago, marks a significant step in the company's efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and explore sustainable energy alternatives.

In collaboration with Midway Ltd, an Australian woodfiber processing specialist, Rio Tinto aims to oversee the planting and management of these innovative farms. The partnership leverages Midway's expertise in land management and Rio Tinto's commitment to sustainable practices.

Pongamia, a tree native to tropical and temperate Asia, has garnered attention for its potential in producing renewable diesel. This alternative fuel source is known to emit significantly less carbon compared to traditional fossil fuels, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

The pilot project, set to be established on approximately 3,000 hectares of cleared land in Queensland, Australia's second-largest state, aims to determine the viability of Pongamia seed oil in meeting Rio Tinto's renewable diesel demands. Queensland, covering an vast area of 1,852,642 square kilometers, provides ample space for such agricultural experiments.

Jonathon McCarthy, Rio Tinto's chief decarbonisation officer, emphasized the importance of this initiative:

"While we continue to pursue electrification as the long-term solution for displacing the majority of our diesel use, the Pongamia seed pilot is an important parallel pathway that could reduce our reliance on diesel in the mid-term."
