"Routh told the Times he'd traveled to Ukraine and spent several months there in 2022 and was trying to recruit Afghan soldiers who fled the Taliban to fight in Ukraine."

In 2020, Routh expressed support for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders while mocking then-candidate Joe Biden. However, more recent posts showed a strong stance in favor of democracy and against Trump, with one message tagging Biden and suggesting campaign slogans emphasizing democratic values.
Family members of the suspect expressed shock and disbelief at the news. Routh's son, Adam, initially stated he had no information about the incident and doubted his father's involvement.
