Suspected Assassination Attempt on Trump: 12-Hour Stakeout Ends in Gunfire

On September 15, 2024, a potential assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump unfolded at his golf course, culminating in gunfire from a Secret Service agent. The incident, which occurred just one day ago, has raised significant security concerns and prompted an ongoing investigation.

According to a federal criminal complaint, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh is suspected of orchestrating a 12-hour stakeout near Trump's golf course. The Secret Service, an agency established in 1865 to combat currency counterfeiting, detected Routh's presence when an agent noticed a rifle protruding from nearby foliage.

The suspect allegedly positioned himself in the area from approximately 2 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on the day of the incident. Upon discovery, the Secret Service agent discharged his weapon in the direction of the perceived threat. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Evidence recovered at the scene included Routh's mobile device, an SKS-style rifle equipped with a scope, and food supplies. The SKS rifle, originally designed in 1943 by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov, was found to have an obliterated serial number, complicating efforts to trace its origin.

Routh appeared before a judge on September 16, 2024, facing charges of firearm possession by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number. His arraignment is scheduled for September 30, 2024, where he is expected to enter a plea.

This incident marks the second potential assassination attempt on Trump within a span of 65 days. On July 13, 2024, a separate incident at a Pennsylvania rally resulted in Trump sustaining injuries and the assailant being fatally shot by Secret Service.

"How does a guy from not here get all the way to Trump International, realize that the former president is golfing and is able to get a rifle in that vicinity? Is this guy part of a conspiracy? Is he a lone gunman?"

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder commented

The FBI, founded in 1908 by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte, is spearheading the investigation into this potential assassination attempt. While initial charges do not explicitly accuse Routh of attempting to assassinate Trump, the ongoing probe may lead to additional charges.

Approximately 45 minutes after fleeing the golf course, Routh was apprehended during a traffic stop on Interstate 95, the longest north-south Interstate Highway in the United States. The vehicle he was driving, a Nissan, bore a stolen license plate registered to a 2012 white Ford truck.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working to determine if this incident is part of a larger conspiracy or the actions of a lone individual. The case has highlighted potential vulnerabilities in security measures and raised questions about the accessibility of high-profile figures like former presidents.

With the U.S. presidential election approaching in November, this event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by political figures. As the nation prepares for another electoral cycle, the incident underscores the critical role of agencies like the Secret Service and FBI in safeguarding democracy and its key players.
