Blackwood, Cariah and Odean named in WI ODI squad, as Hetmyer, Paul and Motie ruled out

Jamaica top-order batsman Jermaine Blackwood and Trinidad and Tobago allrounder Yannic Cariah were both named in the West Indies team for the three-match CG United One-Day International (ODI) Series against New Zealand, which starts tomorrow at Kensington Oval.

The pair were included after batsman Shimron Hetmyer pulled out for “personal reasons” while allrounder Keemo Paul and Gudakesh Motie were ruled out through injury.

Blackwood, the Test vice-captain, has not played an ODI since 2015 while Cariah has never represented the West Indies but caught the eye of the selection panel during duty for the WI A Team against Bangladesh.

Cariah also captained the West Indies Emerging Players when they won the CG United Super50 Cup (then the Colonial Insurance Super50 Cup) title in 2019.

Odean Smith, the seam-bowling allrounder, was also added as a reserve.

“Hetmyer has to attend to a family matter in Guyana,” said Cricket West Indies (CWI) lead men’s team selector Desmond Haynes. “Unfortunately, Motie is not yet able to rejoin the squad and Keemo is struggling with an injury. However, it provides an opportunity for Yannic Cariah to get a chance.

“He is someone that has been performing well on the regional circuit and we feel now is the right time to integrate him into the senior team set-up.

“Odean Smith has been added [as a reserve] on the back of some notable performances in the T20I Series. He has displayed the all-round ability to change games and we look forward to his continued development.”

West Indies ODI team: Nicholas Pooran (captain), Shai Hope (vice-captain), Jermaine Blackwood, Shamarh Brooks, Yannic Cariah, Keacy Carty, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Jayden Seales, Kevin Sinclair.
