The female companion of a man who opened fire at the police on Tuesday in Freeport has been detained for having 600 rounds of ammunition.

The woman, 23, lives at Enterprise in Chaguanas.

The alleged shooter was on the run up to Wednesday.

The police said PCs Rampersad and Packette were on mobile patrol in the district at around 4.50 pm on Tuesday, when they received information and intercepted a white Hyundai Elantra with two occupants on Mandela Drive.

The male driver quickly got out of the car, pointed a gun at the officers and started shooting. They shot back.

The driver ran into an overgrown area.

Members of the Central Division Task Force were called in to help search for the man, but did not find him.

The police searched the car and found a blue bag on the centre console which contained 600 rounds of 5.56 ammunition.

They arrested the woman, who was in the front passenger seat.

Insp Estrada, WPC Osborne, PC George, and other police visited the scene and gathered evidence.

There were no reports of injuries.

PC Rampersad is leading the investigation.
