SSFL postpones Premier matches “due to inclement weather”; “Naps” vs Benedict’s on pause

The Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) executive has postponed all Premier Division games scheduled for today, “due to the inclement weather”. The games will now be moved “to a date to be fixed”.

The decision follows heavy rainfall this morning with flooding across parts of the country.

Today’s marquee match-up was set for the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva where defending champions Naparima College were to meet St Benedict’s College at 3.30pm in an intriguing Group A showdown.

At present, “Naps”, who have a game in hand, trail by second placed St Benedict’s by four points and need a victory to retain any realistic hope of advancing to the knockout stage of the 2022 competition.

Fatima, who beat Naparima and drew with St Benedict’s already this season, are virtually assured of a spot in the final four.

Weather permitting, the Premier Division will resume on Saturday with four games scheduled for Group B.

Leaders San Juan North Secondary and Presentation College (San Fernando) have a five gap lead over the chasing pack and are odds on to both qualify for the final four. However, there are five teams still in danger of relegation: East Mucurapo Secondary (six points), Chaguanas North Secondary (four points), Trinity College East (three points), Malick Secondary (three points), and Moruga Secondary (zero points).

The bottom placed team in each group is automatically relegated to the Championship Division while the two second from last schools face a playoff survival scrap.

As such, Moruga and Chaguanas North—both newly promoted teams—will be fighting for their top flight futures when they clash at 1.30pm on the QRC grounds this Saturday.
