The Magallanes prosecutorʼs office in southern Chile started looking into a harassment case against Gabriel Boric - a blow that hits his already troubled administration. The probe relates to events from his law-student days in Punta Arenas: back then he was studying and living there (which was about 11 years ago)
Boricʼs lawyer quickly denied these claims saying theyʼre not true; he explained that the woman who filed charges had sent many un-wanted emails to Boric including some with explicit content. The 38-year old president found out about this case during a regular check-up and wanted to make it public right away
This new problem comes at a bad time for Chileʼs left-wing government which has been dealing with:
- Low ratings in polls
- Bad results in local voting
- Another sex-related scandal with a top official
The situation got more complex after last months arrest of ex-deputy interior minister Manuel Monsalve who faces rape charges from a staff member. All this affects Boricʼs team as they move towards next years presidential vote; its especially hard since they tried to focus on making things better for women
