Dutch officials float idea of sending rejected asylum seekers to Uganda

Dutch government explores plan to relocate rejected African asylum seekers to Uganda. The proposal‚ part of a broader European trend‚ raises questions about legality and feasibility while Uganda expresses openness to discussions

The Dutch government‚ known for its right-wing leanings is thinking about a new way to deal with asylum seekers from Africa who dont get accepted. The idea which came up roughly a year ago‚ is to send them to Uganda.

Reinette Klever the person in charge of trade and development for the Netherlands‚ talked about this plan when she went to visit Uganda. However its not clear if this idea can actually work or if its even allowed by law.

When asked about it Jeje Odongo (who deals with foreign stuff in Uganda) said: “We are open to any discussions“. He was talking to NOS a Dutch TV channel.

This idea is part of something bigger thats happening in Europe. Countries are trying to make “return hubs“ outside the EU. These places would be for asylum seekers who get turned down‚ and theyd stay there until they can go back to where they came from

The whole thing brings up a bunch of questions: Is it okay to do this? Can they actually make it happen? And does Uganda really want to be part of it? Nobody knows for sure yet

Its important to note that this is just an idea right now – nothing is set in stone. But it shows how some countries in Europe are trying to find new ways to deal with people who want to come live there
