Being the youngest of four siblings and the only boy in the family, life was no easy journey for Maciu Radakua.
The 27-year-old from Mokani, Bau Tailevu with maternal links to Tavakubu, Saru, Lautoka has overcomed numerous challenges to secure a brighter future for him and his loved ones.
Straight out of high school in 2016, Maciu found himself at a crossroad.
His father, Maciu Radakua (Senior) the sole breadwinner of the family, was a market vendor selling ‘bila’ at Nausori Market.
Recognising the financial struggles at home, Maciu made a decision to stay at home and help his father.
During this time, Maciu discovered his passion for music and spirituality.
Every Sunday, he dedicated himself to the church choir, where he honed his musical talents and lent his voice to the congregation’s hymns.
However, life’s responsibilities continued to mount, particularly after he got married in March, 2018, and started a family.
The cost of living weighed heavily on his shoulders, compelling him to seek alternative sources of income.
After nearly two years of job hunting and dedicating his time to the church choir, Maciu’s perseverance paid off.
In August 2018, he worked for Goodman Fielder in the broiler department.
While gainfully employed, Maciu’s dreams extended beyond his circumstances.
He aspired to provide a better life for his wife and two children, envisioning a brighter future overseas.
“In 2020, I heard people at my workplace talking about the labour scheme under the National Employment Centre (NEC) so I applied,” he said.
“Áfter more than a year since I applied, I received a phone call from the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations to say my name has been in the list for those going to Australia.
“I attended the fitness test and passed. We were then told to attend the training. After the training I got my certificate and the date of our departure was then released.”
In August of the following year, Radakua embraced a four-year contract as a meat processor at Wild Game Company in Walgett, New South Wales, Australia.
It was a challenging journey, but undeterred, Maciu set ambitious goals.

His story reminds us that with unwavering faith, perseverance, and dedication, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness.
His journey from a church choir to a new life in Australia is a testament for the indomitable spirit of the human soul.
