Liaison officer, Ana Degei, said flood warning was currently in force for the Wainibuka River and down the main Rewa River.
For Lau and Lomaiviti Groups
This is in addition to the warning for Lau Group, Lomaiviti Group, coastal land areas of Ra-Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, Yasawa Group, Mamanuca Group, Serua-Namosi, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, Southern Bua and Cakaudrove to Udu Point.
Strong easterly winds with speeds of 40-55 kilometres per hour over the mentioned localities were expected.
The weather office advised that winds of this strength can cause large tree branches to sway, whistling in wires, impedes walking and make it difficult to use umbrellas.
Ms Degei said the bad weather was linked to a trough of low pressure that slow moving over the Fiji Group.
“The associated cloud and rain is expected to affect most parts of the country until later Tuesday,” she said.
“Also, a high pressure system to the far south of the country continues to generate and direct a strong easterly wind flow over Fiji waters.
Yasawa Group
“Occasional rain which can be heavy at times over Yasawa Group, interior of Viti Levu, Northern Viti Levu (i.e.Tavua and Ra-Rakiraki areas), Eastern Viti Levu (i.e. Coastal SeruaNamosi, Suva, Nausori and Tailevu), Vanua Levu, Lau Group and Lomaiviti Group.
For the rest of the Fiji Group, expect cloudy periods with occasional showers.”
Ms Degei added that low level roads near to small streams, culverts and flood prone areas were likely to have already been affected by flood waters in the upper catchment of the Wainimala, Wainibuka and Rewa rivers.
