Global Protests Erupt as Gaza Conflict Nears One-Year Mark

Massive demonstrations in major cities worldwide demand end to Gaza conflict as it approaches its first anniversary. Protesters express concerns over regional escalation and ongoing violence.

As the conflict in Gaza approaches its one-year mark, global protests have erupted in major cities worldwide, demanding an end to the ongoing violence. On October 5, 2024, approximately 40,000 pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched through central London, with thousands more gathering in Paris, Rome, Manila, and Cape Town.

The conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel, has resulted in significant casualties and displacement. According to Israeli tallies, the initial attack claimed 1,200 lives and led to the abduction of about 250 hostages. In response, Israel's military campaign in Gaza has reportedly caused nearly 42,000 Palestinian fatalities, as stated by Gaza's health ministry, and displaced almost the entire population of 2.3 million.

The scale of destruction and loss of life in Gaza has sparked some of the largest global protests in recent years. These demonstrations have raised concerns among Israel's supporters about the creation of an antisemitic climate, with some protesters questioning Israel's right to exist as a nation.

The conflict has also spread beyond Gaza, involving Iran-backed groups in Lebanon, Yemen, and Iraq. Israel has intensified its campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon in recent weeks, while Iran launched a missile barrage against Israel earlier this week.

Protesters expressed fears of further regional escalation. In Paris, Lebanese-French demonstrator Houssam Houssein stated:

"We fear a regional war, because there are tensions with Iran at the moment, and perhaps with Iraq and Yemen. We really need to stop the war because it's now become unbearable."

International diplomacy, led by the United States, has thus far failed to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas seeks an agreement to end the war, while Israel maintains that fighting can only cease when Hamas is eradicated.

It's important to note that the Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with limited access to clean water and electricity. The ongoing conflict has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation, with the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) providing essential services to Palestinian refugees.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has deep historical roots, dating back to the late 19th century. Significant events such as the Balfour Declaration of 1917, the Six-Day War in 1967, and the Oslo Accords of 1993 have shaped the current situation. The international community, including the United Nations, has repeatedly called for a two-state solution to resolve the conflict.

As the first anniversary of the current conflict approaches, demonstrations are planned in other cities across the world, including the United States and Chile. Some demonstrations in support of Israel are also scheduled for the weekend.

The ongoing crisis continues to challenge international diplomacy and humanitarian efforts, highlighting the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
