Greek authorities search for two missing people after a migrant boat sinks near southern Greece. 97 survivors were rescued and taken to Crete while EU leaders meet to talk about migration issues

The Greek coast guard is looking for two people who are missing after a boat with 100 migrants sank near Greeceʼs most southern island on 10/16/24. They found one mans body in the sea and saved 97 people (a Turkish ship helped with this).

The people who were saved (85 men 2 women and 10 kids) were taken to Crete island: one woman had to go to hospital. The coast guard caught two men (26 and 24 years old) who they think were smugglers.

The people on the boat said they left Tobruk Libya on 10/13/24 and paid between 7000 and 10000 euros each. Nobody knows why the boat sank.

A few days ago near Kos island (its in eastern Greece) another boat that came from Turkey turned over and 2 women and 2 kids died‚ but 27 people were saved.

Greece is a place where many people come to get into the European Union. They come from Africa Asia and the Middle East because of war and being poor. By early October 2024 more than 42000 migrants came to Greece – most of them by sea.

While Greek people were looking for the missing people EU leaders were meeting in Brussels. They want to make it harder for migrants to come to EU countries. This is because more people are supporting far-right groups that dont like foreigners
