Iran leads naval exercises with Russia and Oman in Indian Ocean

Iran started naval drills with Russia and Oman in the Indian Ocean. The exercises aim to boost regional security and maritime cooperation‚ with nine countries observing amidst ongoing Middle East tensions

Iran kicked off naval drills called “IMEX 2024“ in the Indian Ocean on Oct 14‚ 2024 with Russia and Oman taking part. Nine other countries are watching the exercises

The drills goals include:
- Improving regional security
- Growing cooperation between countries
- Showing ability to keep peace and friendship in the seas

Participants will practice keeping trade routes safe making sure ships can move freely‚ and working on rescue operations

These exercises are happening while theres a lot going on in the Middle East – Israel and Hamas are fighting (started about a year ago) and Yemens Houthi rebels are attacking ships in the Red Sea

Iran has been working more with Russia and China on military stuff lately. They did similar exercises together in the Gulf of Oman about 7 months ago

Countries watching the current drills include Saudi Arabia Qatar India Pakistan Bangladesh and Thailand

The exercises show Iran is trying to build relationships with different countries in the area – even ones it hasnʼt always gotten along with. Its also a way for Iran to show off its navy and make connections with other militaries
