Iran kicked off naval drills called “IMEX 2024“ in the Indian Ocean on Oct 14‚ 2024 with Russia and Oman taking part. Nine other countries are watching the exercises
The drills goals include:
- Improving regional security
- Growing cooperation between countries
- Showing ability to keep peace and friendship in the seas
Participants will practice keeping trade routes safe making sure ships can move freely‚ and working on rescue operations
These exercises are happening while theres a lot going on in the Middle East – Israel and Hamas are fighting (started about a year ago) and Yemens Houthi rebels are attacking ships in the Red Sea
Iran has been working more with Russia and China on military stuff lately. They did similar exercises together in the Gulf of Oman about 7 months ago
Countries watching the current drills include Saudi Arabia Qatar India Pakistan Bangladesh and Thailand
The exercises show Iran is trying to build relationships with different countries in the area – even ones it hasnʼt always gotten along with. Its also a way for Iran to show off its navy and make connections with other militaries
We aim to safeguard peace‚ friendship and maritime security
These kinds of drills could change how countries work together on keeping the seas safe in that part of the world
