Lebanese Americans support Kamala Harris for president‚ citing Biden administrations backing of Lebanon. The endorsement comes amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Lebanon‚ with some Arab Americans shifting political allegiances

In Grand Rapids Michigan‚ a group of well-known Lebanese Americans have thrown their support behind Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential race. They praised the Biden administrations unwavering backing of Lebanon‚ and expressed hope for continued support if Harris secures victory in the 11/5/2024 election.

This endorsement comes at a time of heightened tension in the region. Over the past year‚ Israeli attacks on Lebanon have resulted in at least 2‚350 casualties (as reported by Lebanese health officials) and displaced more than 12 million people. Hezbollah‚ a militant group has also launched attacks on Israel‚ resulting in about 50 Israeli deaths.

The list of supporters includes former Congress members Donna Shalala and Toby Moffett‚ as well as Ray LaHood – who served as transportation secretary under Barack Obama. Academics CEOs‚ and investors are also among the signatories.

However‚ not all Arab Americans and Muslims are aligning with the Democratic Party. Some are distancing themselves due to the Biden administrations stance on Israelʼs conflict with Hamas. Others are turning to Donald Trump or third-party candidates like Jill Stein of the Green Party.

The endorsement letter‚ organized by Ed Gabriel (president of the American Task Force on Lebanon) highlights the groups confidence in Harrisʼ commitment to addressing violence in Lebanon and supporting necessary reforms. They contrast her position with that of Trump‚ though without providing specifics.

Trumps campaign has not yet responded‚ but sources suggest increased outreach efforts in Michigan are planned. Trump has described Israels attacks on Lebanon as “unacceptable“ but hasnt outlined a clear strategy.

The letter emphasizes the dire situation in Lebanon: “The Lebanese people have suffered terribly from the loss of innocent lives and massive displacement of families and one of the worst economic disasters in the world caused by wide-spread corruption. They cannot afford another long drawn out war that further destroys Lebanon“ It concludes with a call for a ceasefire
