The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held its 23rd meeting in Islamabad today bringing together leaders and officials from member states. The event which took place under tight security saw representatives from China Russia India and other countries discussing ways to improve cooperation in various fields.
Li Qiang Chinas Premier and Mikhail Mishustin Russias Prime Minister used the occasion to announce plans for closer ties between their nations. Mishustin stated that despite external challenges the two countries are working on joint investment projects and new transport routes. He also mentioned efforts to strengthen food security in both nations. In response Li expressed Chinas willingness to enhance strategic coordination with Moscow.
The gathering focused on boosting collaboration in areas such as security trade health and climate change mitigation. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar Indias External Affairs Minister emphasized the importance of trust and good neighborliness among SCO members – a statement that carries weight given the complex history between India and Pakistan since the partition in 1947.
Shehbaz Sharif Pakistans Prime Minister highlighted the significance of expanding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and called for stability in Afghanistan. He stressed that a peaceful Afghanistan is crucial for regional trade opportunities. Sharif also urged the Taliban government to prevent the use of Afghan territory for terrorist activities against neighboring countries.
The meeting took place against a backdrop of security concerns. About a week ago two Chinese engineers working on projects related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor were killed in a suicide attack. This incident underscores the challenges faced by Chinese nationals involved in various initiatives across Pakistan.
In a joint statement SCO members reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation in political security economic and cultural spheres. They also expressed support for Chinas Belt and Road Initiative and pledged to work together on addressing climate change issues.
The next SCO meeting is scheduled to take place in Russia in 2025. As the organization continues to evolve it remains a platform for member states to discuss shared interests and challenges in an ever-changing global landscape
