A recent independent review has pointed out big problems with the Secret Service after Donald Trump almost got shot last year. The report says the agency has gotten too set in its ways and needs to change fast.
The review came after a scary moment in Butler Pennsylvania (about 15 months ago) when a bullet just missed Trumps head. This made people worry about how well protected candidates are.
The panel that did the review found lots of mistakes that led to the Butler incident‚ They said:
- The Secret Service has gotten too comfortable
- Risks have gone up but the agency hasnt kept up
- There are issues with how they plan and whoʼs in charge
To fix things the panel suggested:
- Using drones or helicopters to watch outdoor events
- Making sure all the different police groups talk to each other better
- Having a clear report when the protected person arrives
The acting boss of the Secret Service Ronald Rowe‚ says theyʼre already working on getting better. He wants more money from Congress to make big changes happen.
Without that reform‚ the Independent Review Panel believes another Butler can and will happen again
Even with the changes‚ there was another close call. Just two months after Butler someone hid at Trumps golf course in Florida for almost 12 hours before getting caught.
The panel wants most changes done by last spring‚ and checked on by next fall. They hope this will stop anything like Butler from happening again
