Donald Trump announced a 10% tariff plan for Chinese imports starting next year; his goal is stopping illegal drugs coming to US. The Chinese embassy in Washington quickly pushed back on this idea
No one will win a trade war or a tariff war
The embassy points out that US-China trade helps both sides‚ and its wrong to think China lets drug materials flow to America. After Xi Jinping and Joe Biden made a deal last year China started doing more to stop drug crimes
Last summer brought some good news: China made its rules stronger for three chemicals that make fentanyl (which is a big problem in US). The countries top legal office told police to work harder on catching drug dealers; and both US-China teams did some investigations together
China says it told US about how its fighting drugs - showing real action after the Biden and Xi meeting. Both countries working on:
- Stopping illegal money moves
- Controlling drug-making chemicals
- Finding and catching drug sellers
- Working on cases together
The trade-drug problem gets more complex as Trump plans to start his new job at White House in couple months. His tariff idea comes while US-China already made some progress on drug control this year
