The Perseid meteor shower reaches a peak in mid-August but this year it falls on the night of Friday the 12th and coincides with the summer month’s full Sturgeon Moon.
It will be the last supermoon of the year and may outshine the Perseid celestial event, the Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation (CSEO) also announced on Thursday.
“The Perseid meteor shower is considered as one of the most spectacular ones of the year, as their ‘shooting stars’ are exceptionally fast and bright – often with long fiery tails,” CSEO also said.
“Their name comes from the fact that they appear to fall from the region of the constellation Perseus, which is located towards the northeast, depending on the time,” it added.
As for the Sturgeon moon, this is the considered to be fourth supermoon in a row after the Buck moon in July, Strawberry moon in June and Flower moon in May.
A supermoon refers to a full moon when the Moon is within 90% of perigee – its closet approach to Earth.
