The Cyprus Third Age Observatory on Thursday reported that a number of elderly people live in atrocious conditions in nursing homes all across the island.
One of the Observatory’s directors, Yiannoula Antoniou-Efclidou, told state radio that people who worked in specific nursing homes have reported the atrocious conditions.
However, they refuse to make official complaints or provide testimony before competent authorities, she added.
She also said the law does not provide for the surprise inspection of nursing homes for dignified living conditions for the elderly residents.
That’s why, she added, the State should set up a competent committee whose task will be to carry out surprise inspections in nursing homes.
