Hawaii Man's Ukraine Stint Precedes Alleged Trump Assassination Attempt

In the summer of 2022, Ryan Routh, a 58-year-old man from Hawaii, found himself in the heart of Kyiv, Ukraine's capital. His presence there has gained renewed attention following his alleged involvement in an assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump on September 16, 2023.

Routh's journey to Ukraine began with aspirations to join the fight against Russian forces. However, his plans took an unexpected turn when he was deemed ineligible due to age restrictions and lack of military experience. These criteria are part of the strict requirements set by the Ukrainian Armed Forces for foreign volunteers, reflecting the complex nature of integrating international support into national defense structures.

Undeterred by this setback, Routh redirected his efforts towards encouraging others to support Ukraine's cause. In an interview with Newsweek Romania in June 2022, he expressed his views on the conflict:

"A lot of the other conflicts are grey but this conflict is definitely black and white. This is about good versus evil."

Ryan Routh's perspective on the Ukraine conflict

This statement came approximately four months into Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022. It's worth noting that the broader Russia-Ukraine conflict dates back to 2014 with the Russian annexation of Crimea.

Routh's activities in Ukraine extended beyond mere advocacy. In March 2023, he claimed to have been involved in efforts to recruit U.S.-trained Afghan fighters for Ukraine's cause. This initiative, however, reportedly faced obstacles from the Ukrainian defense ministry regarding visa issuances.

The International Legion, a unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces formed in 2022 for foreign volunteers, has explicitly distanced itself from Routh. They stated, "Ryan Wesley Routh has never been part of, associated with, or linked to the International Legion in any capacity."

Adding to the complexity of Routh's involvement in Ukraine, there appears to be confusion regarding his association with volunteer organizations. While he was identified as the head of the International Volunteer Center by some sources, the founder of a Ukraine aid group with the same name, Ian Netupsky, denied any connection with Routh.

As of September 2024, Ukrainian authorities are investigating Routh's role in the country. This inquiry comes amidst the broader context of thousands of foreign volunteers who have been drawn to support Ukraine in various capacities since the onset of the conflict.

The case of Ryan Routh highlights the intricate web of international involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war, touching on issues of foreign fighters, volunteer organizations, and the global response to regional conflicts. As investigations continue, it serves as a reminder of the far-reaching implications of international conflicts and the diverse ways individuals choose to engage with them.
