Italy's migrant plan hits snag as court orders return from Albania

Last week an Italian court made a decision that could shake up the governments plan to handle asylum-seekers. The court said that a group of migrants in Albania should be brought back to Italy‚ which is a big problem for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloniʼs idea to keep migrants outside the EU.

Meloni thinks the courts choice is unfair. She said its up to her team to decide which countries are safe for migrants‚ not the court. The government wants to make new rules to fix this issue. “Perhaps the government needs to clarify better what is meant by safe country‚“ Meloni said while visiting Lebanon.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi thinks they can change the courts mind. He said theyll keep fighting this all the way to the Supreme Court if they have to. The government is having a big meeting on 10/21/24 to figure out what to do next.

The court said Egypt and Bangladesh (where the migrants are from) arent safe enough. This is because of something the European Court of Justice said recently about safe countries. The court thinks the migrants have “a right to be brought to Italy“.

The plan to keep migrants in Albania was supposed to stop people from trying to cross the sea to Italy. Some other European countries liked this idea‚ but now its not looking so good. The migrants who were in Albania will be back in Italy by Sunday.

People who dont agree with Meloni say this proves her plan is against the law and should be thrown out. But the government isnt giving up – theyre going to try to change things so they can keep their plan going
