KENYA: Governor Elections Suspended In Mombasa, Kakamega Counties

AGENCIES | Citizen – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has suspended elections for gubernatorial positions in Mombasa and Kakamega Counties after errors were found on the ballot papers for the respective positions.

In a press briefing on Monday, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said following the occurrence, the elections for governorship seats in Mombasa and Kakamega shall be suspended until further notice.

Elections for members of the National Assembly in Pokot South and Kacheliba constituencies have also been suspended due to errors on ballot papers.

Chebukati attributed the suspension to discrepancies discovered on the ballot boxes as photos of candidates vying for the seats and their names were incorrect.

“Ballot papers for the following elective positions were noted to have errors. Ballot papers for Kakamega county governor positions, in Mombasa County have wrong gubernatorial candidate pictures and the details printed on them. Positions for members of the National Assembly in Pokot South and three in Kachiriba also have wrong gubernatorial candidate pictures and the details printed on them,” said Chebukati.

“As a result, elections for their respective positions have been suspended later, which shall be announced through a gazette notice.”
