Justice for Dr Wondwossen Assefa

WHO IS DR WONDWESSON

Dr. Wondwesson Assefa is a well renowned medical doctor with 30 years’ experience serving his country as GP, Health facility administrator, consultant in the medical field and President of the Ethiopian Private Doctors Association¹. He is currently President of the Ethiopian Family Guidance Association, which is responsible for family planning and birth control for underprivileged societies in Ethiopia¹.

Dr. Wondwesson Aseffa had been working on humanitarian projects for the last two years supporting victims of genocide and displaced people from Oromia and particularly from Wellega. He helped humanitarian institutions of the Amhara people and was an outspoken critic of government policies². His views and his humanitarian activity for victims of violence against women and children had made him a target of the regime. He is a father of 4 and his kids and his wife do not know where he is and no one has seen him so far.

The Amhara Prosperity Party led by Dr. Yilikal Kefyale and the security chief are responsible for his abduction and detention without charges. His family and colleagues are concerned because Ethiopia Government Commandos abducted him on April 14th, 2023 in Gonder Town from his hotel². He was arrested in an undisclosed location without any charges and we fear for his safety. We fear that security forces can torture him unless the international community brings his case to public.

About 13 days ago during public protests in the Amhara region he had a conversation with journalist Meskerem Abera, in which he expressed his frustration with government policy². His conversation was recorded by the government illegally and without court order to be posted on TikTok and arrest Journalist Meskerem Aberra
