Bomb blast at Brazil court crushes ex-president's political hopes

Last weekʼs bomb-attack at Brazilʼs Supreme Court building has made big waves in the countrys political scene. The bomber who died in the blast (linked to last years Capitol riots) targeted both the court and left a car explosion in Congress parking-lot

Justice Alexandre de Moraes points out that this wasnt just a one-time thing: “This has been growing under the false mantle of criminal uses of freedom of expression.“ The attack shows how the court became a target for far-right anger; many think its trying to push them out of politics

The timing couldnt be worse for ex-president Jair Bolsonaro who is trying to fix his political future. He got banned from running for office til 2030 cause he said stuff about the election being fake. Now hes also being checked by cops about:

  • His part in last years January riots
  • Plans to use army to change election results
  • Links to far-right groups

Brazil needs to return to having an adequate environment so that different ideas can confront each other peacefully

The blast killed any chance for giving January riot people a free pass‚ and made Bolsonaros comeback harder. Two big center parties in Congress say they wont back the amnesty idea anymore. Plus‚ his hopes to change the courts mind about letting him run again got much smaller

The whole thing made Brasilia stand together against far-right stuff but some think this might just make angry people even angrier. Its like when you push too hard one way things just get more split up - thats what Creomar de Souza from Dharma political group thinks
