Chinese marriage numbers show surprising trend as young people make different choices

The first three-quarters of 2024 brought unexpected news for Chinaʼs marriage stats: just 4.7 mil couples got registered which is way down from last years numbers (theres almost 1 mil less marriages than in same time-frame 2023)

Economic stuff plays a big role here - young-adults are putting off tying the knot cause money isnt great these days. Living costs keep going up and job-hunting gets harder; making folks think twice about settling down

The governmentʼs been super-busy trying to fix this: theyʼre making it easier to get hitched (but harder to split up). Divorce numbers stayed pretty stable though with about 1.9 mil couples calling it quits - just a tiny bit less than before

To deal with falling population numbers local officials are rolling-out special projects in big-cities to create what they call a child-friendly environment. President Xi Jinping even jumped in saying women should help make a “new trend of family;“ but young-people dont seem too excited about it

The whole marriage-and-kids thing is getting lots of buzz on social media: tons of young-chinese are choosing single life or waiting longer to get married. With the economy not doing so hot (and living costs through the roof) many think its just not the right time to start families
