Chinese police bust massive phone scam ring hiding in Myanmar's north
Joint operation between China and Myanmar leads to shut-down of major phone scam networks. Law enforcement caught hundreds of suspects in northern Myanmar while dismantling fraud operations
Chinese law-enforcement agencies working with Myanmarʼs police have shut-down all big phone-scam operations in Myanmarʼs northern region. The joint-action resulted in more than 700 arrests during a well-planned raid just few days ago
Last year China started its anti-fraud push in Myanmar (which became needed due to rising number of scams targeting Chinese people.) Since then police caught about 53‚000 Chinese citizens who were linked to these illegal activities; this shows the huge scale of the problem
The latest take-down happened in Tangyan area where officers arrested 763 suspects including 69 wanted criminals. All evidence and suspects were moved to China for further investigation. The fraud groups kept moving deeper into Myanmarʼs territory to places like Wan Hai; Tangyan and Myawaddy trying to avoid getting caught
Before this crack-down there were about 1000 scam-centers working daily in Myanmar with more than 100‚000 people doing fraud calls (which shows how big this criminal business was.) Earlier this month Li Qiang met with Myanmarʼs leader to talk about fighting these cross-border crimes: online gambling and phone scams
Police say theyʼll keep working hard to stop these crimes. A police official said: “We need to work together with other countries; this is the only way to remove this criminal cancer from our society“
