Connecticut's pioneer lawmaker gets unexpected backing from Greek groups
First Black congresswoman from Connecticut finds strong support from Divine Nine organizations. Members of Black Greek groups step up to help with her re-election campaign despite her non-member status
Jahana Hayes‚ who broke ground as Connecticuts first Black congresswoman isnt part of the Divine Nine (the well-known Black Greek organizations) but that hasnt stopped them from treating her like one of their own
The re-election campaign of this ground-breaking politician has seen un-expected help from these historic Black sororities and fraternities — their members showing up like they would for a fellow-member. Members of these long-standing organizations have stepped-up in various ways: making phone-calls to voters organizing fund-raisers and walking door-to-door
The support from these Greek letter groups has been wide-ranging including:
- Free legal advice from members
- Presence at campaign events
- Voter outreach programs
- Door-knocking initiatives
- Fund-raising activities
Even though shes not officially a soror (the special term these groups use for sorority sisters)‚ the Divine Nine members have embraced her campaign with enthusiasm — showing up at events to cheer her on and offer their full-hearted support
