Ex-Pakistan PM still locked up: Fresh protests hit Islamabad streets

Street-fights broke out in Islamabad on 11/26/24 as pro-Imran Khan protesters (many holding signs) moved towards parliament building

The ex-cricket star and former leader faces a bunch of legal issues that keep him locked up:

  • Land-swap deal worth 7bn rupees with his wife Bushra Bibi
  • Anti-terrorism charges from last springs protests
  • Selling state-owned gifts worth 140m rupees
  • Breaking state-secrets rules (already cleared)
  • Non-standard marriage timing rules (also cleared)

The whole thing started about 18 months ago when police first grabbed Khan - that caused big street problems with eight people dying in fights. His party PTI says its all made-up charges but courts dont agree

Right now Bushra Bibi (who got out on bail last month) leads new protests; even though her husband got bail in the gifts-selling case about a week ago heʼs still stuck in jail due to other stuff. The ex-PMs supporters say heʼs innocent of everything - including that land deal which they claim was just for charity purposes

Security forces are trying to control todays situation but its getting pretty heated near the parliament building. Khanʼs supporters - whoʼve been protesting on-and-off since spring 2023 - keep pushing for his release while authorities maintain he broke various laws during his time as PM (which ended roughly 2 years ago)
