Gang boss orders mass killing of elderly in Haiti after voodoo priest's advice
Over hundred elderly residents killed in Haitiʼs poorest neighborhood after gang leader blamed them for his childs illness. Local rights group reports gang members used basic weapons in two-day bloodshed
In a shocking two-day rampage last weekend‚ members of a Haiti slum gang killed more than 110 elderly people (using simple weapons like machetes) after their leader got some bad news about his sick kid
The massacre happened in Cite Soleil - a super-crowded poor area next to Port-au-Princeʼs main port where Monel Felix leads the Wharf Jeremie gang. After consulting with a voodoo priest about his childs illness‚ Felix ordered his men to target residents over 60; believing they used witchcraft to harm the child.
The National Human Rights Defense Network says the gangs control is so tight that people cant even use their phones to tell others whats going on. The group has about 300 members and runs things in nearby areas too: Fort Dimanche and La Saline. Felix got himself banned from going to Dominican Republic bout 2 yrs ago
This isnt the first time Haiti saw such violence - here are other recent mass-killings:
- La Saline neighborhood: 71 people died in late-18
- Pont-Sonde area: 115 killed in oct-24
- Both done by different gang groups
The government asked for help from other countries to deal with gangs but its not working great - the UN mission thats there now doesnt have enough people or stuff to do the job right. Some countries wanted to make it a full peacekeeping thing but China and Russia said no in the Security Council
