German defense chief steps aside as Scholz eyes another term
Popular defense minister Boris Pistorius wont challenge Scholz for German chancellorship. His decision comes after recent party discussions that showed cracks in Social Democrats unity
In a late-night video message this fall Boris Pistorius – Germanys well-liked defense minister made his position clear: he doesnt want the top job. The announcement helps clear up some party-related confusion that happened last week (when Social Democrats had some not-so-friendly talks about their future)
Olaf Scholz got good news from this – his path to run again as chancellor just got easier. “Our current chancellor is doing great work and heʼs the right person for this job“ Pistorius said in his straight-forward message; showing his support for the party leader
The Social Democrats are dealing with some in-house problems – the kind that makes everyone a bit un-comfortable. The timing of this whole thing is pretty interesting: its happening while people are talking about maybe having an early vote (which isnt super-common in German politics)
The center-left party needs to fix its internal stuff quick – theyʼve got some work to do before any new election comes up. Pistoriusʼs choice to stay in his defense role shows heʼs thinking more about whats good for the party than his own career-goals
