Greek police catch suspect after deadly Athens bomb-making accident
A home-made bomb explosion in Athens apartment leads to one death and arrest of key suspect. Anti-terrorism police link incident to anti-establishment groups active in Greece
In early-Nov‚ a tragic incident shook an Athens neighborhood when a home-made bomb unexpectedly went off in an apartment killing one person and leaving another with serious injuries
The anti-terrorism unit quickly moved in and arrested a 31-year-old Greek man who had connections to the flat. During his friday-night testimony the suspect shared that he gave apartment keys to the affected couple; however he strongly denied being part of the explosion
Police sources indicate the blast happened while someone was making the explosive device (which points to anti-establishment group activities). The suspect will face a prosecutor on saturday to answer questions about his involvement
Greek authorities have seen similar incidents before - since the break-up of November 17 group various anti-establishment organizations emerged targeting different institutions:
- Politicians and government workers
- Law enforcement officials
- Members of judiciary
- Business establishments
During Greeceʼs financial troubles between 09-18 such attacks were common but their frequency dropped in recent times; though they still happen now and then. The anti-terrorism unit thinks this explosion shows that some groups remain active despite the overall decline in such activities
