Indian farmers clash with police on their way to capital city
About hundred Punjab farmers tried moving towards Delhi but met strong police response at state border. Security forces used tear-gas while protesters demand better crop prices and state support
In a fresh stand-off near Shambhu around hundred farmers got blocked by police when trying to reach Delhi (its about 125 miles north from capital). Security forces met protesters with tear-gas and pepper-spray — making their way forward impossible
The group led by Sarwan Singh Pandher tried getting past first set of barriers but found more iron-made blockades ahead. Before starting their march the leader noted:
We are just a small group‚ not planning to break through
These crop-growers have been staying at Punjab-Haryana border since early-24‚ asking for better prices and state-backed support. Their main requests include:
- Legal promise for minimum crop prices
- Help with debt problems
- Following through with income-related promises
Local authorities in Haryana stopped mobile-net and group messages till dec 9th (saying its needed to stop wrong info spreading). The state minister Anil Vij pointed out that marchers need proper permits to enter Delhi
This push for changes reminds of bigger protests from about 3 years back when Modiʼs government had to take back some farm-related rules after long-running demonstrations. Now Congress party says its fully backing these new requests
