Last-minute power shift: North Carolina lawmakers push unexpected changes

In a quick-paced move North Carolinaʼs GOP lawmakers are pushing thru new rules before their super-voting power ends (which happens in about two months)

The fast-tracked bill wants to re-shape how things work: it gives more election power to the party removes some judge jobs; and cuts down what the new dem leaders can do. The changes would hit both the soon-to-be governor and states top lawyer

Right now Roy Cooper cant stop GOP plans because they have enough votes to push past his no. But come January when Josh Stein becomes governor things will be different - the party wont have its big house majority anymore making it harder to ignore what he says

The timing shows how the party wants to use its last weeks of full control: theyʼre trying to lock-in their influence before losing some power. This quick law-making rush happens right as the state gets ready for new leadership
