Major prison system shake-up: Multiple federal facilities to shut down across US
Federal Bureau makes decision to close seven correctional facilities including troubled California womens prison. Staff and inmates from shuttered locations will move to other facilities nationwide
The Federal Bureau of Prisons announced far-reaching changes to its facility network on dec 5th. The bureaus most notable closure targets the Dublin California womens facility — which gained negative attention due to staff misconduct
The Dublin facility shutdown represents a key-point in the bureaus reform efforts; this location had serious problems with improper staff behavior (a situation that needed quick fixing). Acting Director Peters explained the move as part of wider improvements to the system
Six more minimum-security camps will stop operations in different parts of US:
- Upper mid-west locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota
- Mountain region facility in Colorado
- East coast camps in Pennsylvania and West Virginia
- South-east location in Florida
The bureau started moving both workers and inmates to different places — a process thats happening step-by-step to keep everything working smooth. Regional Administrator Thompson said: “We need to make sure transfers dont create issues at other places“
The bureaus plan shows its trying to fix old problems: these changes affect how they run things from coast-to-coast. Local prison officials work on transfer details while keeping daily operations going
