Melbourne synagogue burns: Two masked suspects on the run after early-morning attack
Two masked people set fire to a historic Melbourne synagogue built by Holocaust survivors causing major damage and one injury. Police started counter-terror investigation as PM speaks against this act
A pre-dawn fire hit Melbournes Adass Israel synagogue (built in mid-60s by Holocaust survivors) causing wide-spread damage and one person got hurt
The attack happened when two mask-wearing people broke-in and used some kind of fuel to start the blaze. A few early-morning prayer visitors had to run through back exit; one of them got burns
Detective Inspector Chris Murray stated: “This looks like a planned hit on this specific building but we dont know the reason yet“. Counter-terror units joined regular police to find those responsible
Benjamin Klein‚ a board-member explained how it all went down: “They banged on doors poured something inside and lit it up; the building caught fire real quick“. Fire-fighters rushed to save holy items - Torah scrolls and prayer-shawls made it out safely
This event adds to growing issues that started about a year ago after Middle East conflict began. Just couple days ago protestors gathered near another synagogue in Sydney; while Anthony Albanese PM said: “This kind of destruction at worship places wont be accepted here“
- Jewish community feels let down
- Anti-jewish acts increased lately
- Counter-terror teams got involved
- Building had major damage
This violence and intimidation and destruction at a place of worship is an outrage; this attack has risked lives and is clearly aimed at creating fear in the community
