New Zealand leader says sorry for shocking care system mistakes of the past

On Nov-12‚ Christopher Luxon made a long-awaited apology speech about bad things in New Zealandʼs care system. The state leader pointed to decades-long problems in different places that were supposed to help people

A big study (done by special government team earlier this year) found that many kids and grown-ups got hurt in these places: state homes foster families and church-run spots. The report showed that about one-third of people who stayed there had really bad experiences — thats more than 200‚000 folks

The problems hit some groups harder than others; Maori and Pacific Islander kids plus disabled people faced most of the bad stuff. Different types of harm happened in these spots between the 50s and late 2010s: physical hurt medical tests without permission and other not-good things

The PMʼs words came after investigators spent lots of time looking at what went wrong in places that shouldʼve been safe. Its clear now that the system didnt work right for many years — making life hard for those who needed help most
