Northeast India state cuts internet as protesters target politicians' homes

Manipurs govt stopped internet-services and put a curfew in place after crowds attacked local politicians homes (its the latest turn in the states ethnic problems). Three bodies found in a river last friday made things worse - they were part of a Meitei family that went missing after some trouble with Kuki people

Security forces are dealing with big crowds in Imphal that wanted to talk to law-makers: these protesters got mad and started breaking stuff when nobody listened. At least 9 politicians houses got surrounded‚ and 4 of them got damaged. L Sushindro Meitei said by phone: “my house is getting attacked right now“ while he was somewhere else safe

The region has seen lots of problems since 05/2023 - about 250 people died and 60k had to leave their homes because Meitei and Kuki groups dont agree about jobs and school spots. Last week a woman from the Kuki side died when someone burned her; and on 11/11 ten armed Kuki men got killed in a fight with guards

The whole state (with 3‚2 million people) is now split in two parts - Meiteis live in valleys; Kukis stay in hills; and theres empty space between them where army guys keep watch. The govt sent more guards to help but the fighting keeps happening
