Qatar steps away from Gaza peace talks as negotiations hit dead end
Qatar halts its role in Gaza peace-making efforts after latest talks collapse. Middle-eastern nation decides Hamas political office in Doha doesnt fit current situation
In a major shift Qatar announced it wont continue its peace-maker role between Hamas and Israel until both sides show real interest in talks (this comes after multiple failed attempts at finding common ground)
The middle-eastern nation which has been key in peace discussions for about a year now made two big moves: first it stopped trying to get both sides to talk and second - decided that Hamas political office in Doha isnt working anymore. The US told Qatar that Hamas presence in their country wasnt ok anymore after the group said no to the latest peace deal
Qatar worked with other countries to try and stop the fighting:
- The United States helped with talks
- Egypt joined peace-making efforts
- Multiple rounds of discussions happened since fall-2023
The last try to make peace happened in mid-october: it didnt work because Hamas didnt agree with short-term stop-fighting plan. “We can only help when both sides really want to find a solution“ [[Qatar official close to negotiations stated]]
The peace-making process hit a wall after many tries - Qatar which has been a go-between for talks told Hamas‚ Israel and US about its choice to step back from negotiations. This move shows how hard itʼs becoming to find any way to stop the year-long conflict in Gaza
