Russian cyber-mischief hits US polling stations with fake threats
Several polling places got fake bomb warnings from Russian domains during election day. FBI and state officials found no real danger while fighting against made-up news about voting problems
On election day multiple polling spots got hit with phony bomb-threats (sent through Russian email accounts) but FBI says its all just hot-air. Brad Raffensperger Georgiaʼs top election guy confirmed that two voting places near Atlanta had to stop working because of these threats
The FBI found some other sneaky stuff going on too: fake news clips and made-up warnings were floating around. These not-so-smart tricks included some pretty wild stories:
- A fake news bit saying folks should vote from home cause of terror-threats
- A bogus video about prison-voting schemes in three states
- Some copy-cat FBI warnings that werent real at all
Election officials and cyber-experts are working non stop to keep things running smooth. If you see something fishy theres plenty of ways to tell someone about it: phone lines web-sites and email addresses are ready for your tips; just make sure youre getting your voting info from your local election office - not random internet posts
The FBI and state big-shots are keeping their eyes peeled – watching both real-world polling spots and online shenanigans (which seem to pop up more often these days). Local voting officials say its business-as-usual at most places despite these attempts to cause trouble
