Senate prepares for historic vote that could change U.S. weapon sales to Israel

The U.S Senate is getting ready for a big-time vote on 11/20/24 about selling weapons to Israel. Bernie Sanders pushed for three different no-go rules that would stop selling some bomb parts and tank stuff (which Boeing makes these days)

Sanders thinks its wrong to keep sending weapons: “Weʼve given $18 billion in tax money and weapons that hit crowded places. They dont care much about telling civilians from fighters apart.“ The rules would block sales of mortar rounds JDAM kits and tank shells

The whole thing started after that Hamas attack back in fall-23 when they killed 1‚200 people and grabbed 250-plus hostages. Right now Gazaʼs got 2.3 million people with most running from their homes — and health folks there say 43‚922 Palestinians died in the past year-or-so

Last month Bidenʼs team checked if Israel was helping get aid through to Gaza: they said yes but aid groups said no-way. Jeff Merkley and Peter Welch joined up with Sanders while Elizabeth Warren and Chris Van Hollen backed the plan too

Even though Congress can stop big weapon deals these rules probably wont pass — lots of folks from both sides really like Israel. Still the vote might make some noise and get people talking about whats going on over there
