South Korean leader's power move backfires as country faces historic crisis
South Korean presidentʼs sudden martial-law declaration shocked the nation causing mass-protests and impeachment attempts. Political parties now fight over control while constitutional experts warn of serious law-breaking
In a shocking turn-of-events Yoon Suk-yeol tried to take control over South-Korea using martial-law (first time since the dark days of 1980s); however his plan failed fast due to huge push-back
The nations capital saw mass-protests with thousands gathering near parliament building demanding presidents removal. Han Dong-hoon who used to support Yoon but now opposes him couldnʼt get his party to vote: they stayed away from voting hall blocking the two-thirds needed rule
The ruling partys choice comes from their past problems – when they lost power after Park Geun-hye got kicked out in 16ʼ. Kim Gi-hyeon explained it simply: “we cant keep losing presidents we put in power and expect peoples trust“
Angry citizens bombarded politicians phones while opposition leader Lee Jae-myung promised another try at removing Yoon next week. They need just 8 more votes from ruling party to win
The warning signs were there – Kim Min-seok (who fought for democracy as student) told everyone in late summer that Yoon might try this. He even made new rules to stop such things but nobody listened; now his fears came true
Yoons problems started right after winning by tiny margin in 22ʼ. His time as leader had many issues:
- Wife got expensive bag as gift
- Both linked to stock price tricks
- Got involved in election mess
- Ratings went way down
A frantic last-ditch effort
Law teachers say Yoon broke many rules: he tried stopping lawmakers from voting sent troops to parliament and wanted to arrest his critics. Hong Jang-won from intel service said he got orders to grab opposition leaders calling them anti-state people
Now police look into charges that could put Yoon in jail for life while Han claims hell make president quit soon. But Lee says thats not how things work – you cant just give power to someone else like that
