South Korean politics in chaos: Top opposition figure alerts about martial law threat
South Koreas parliament prepares for crucial impeachment vote amid rising political tensions. Opposition leader raises alarm about possible martial-law declaration before the upcoming vote
In a fast-moving political crisis Lee Jae-myung warned that President Yoon Suk Yeol might try to declare martial law again before saturdays impeachment vote (the president imposed martial law earlier this week which caused major economic problems in the country)
The Democratic Party leader spoke about his worries during an office meeting: some rumors about Yoons visit to parliament made opposition members gather quickly to stop any possible martial-law attempts. Even though the presidents office denied such plans Lee thinks theres still a chance for a late-night declaration. “The situation is getting worse there are fewer ways to escape‚ and he might see it as a breakthrough to destroy the existing systems“ he said
The parliament needs two-thirds support to pass the impeachment motion; which means:
- At least 8 members from Yoons party must vote for it
- The ruling Peoples Power Party needs to change its mind
- Current party position blocks the impeachment
The PPPs chief Han Dong-hoon made an interesting statement about removing Yoon from power - but his party didnt support this idea. Lee (who lost to Yoon in election about 2 years ago) faces his own problems with a recent law-breaking conviction. Still he thinks removing the president is the only solution: its like getting rid of a virus that got into our working system
