Thailand demands answers after Myanmar navy shoots at fishing boats near border
Thai-Myanmar relations get complicated after naval shooting incident leaves one fisherman dead near maritime border. Thai government takes quick diplomatic steps while questioning Myanmarʼs territorial claims
Yesterday a serious border incident happened when Myanmarʼs navy shot at Thai fishing boats leaving one fisherman dead and two hurt (the boats were somewhere between 4-5.7 nautical miles from shore)
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra spoke about this issue - she dont accept Myanmarʼs claims about territorial waters violation. “We dont support violence whatever the circumstances“ she stated while asking for quick release of four Thai citizens who are now kept with other 27 fishermen
The defense ministry of Thailand took quick steps: they sent an official letter through local border channels asking for clear info about what happened; its important to note that minister Phumtham Wechayachai wants both boat and crew back asap
Thai diplomatic response included multiple steps - Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa wrote a formal letter and called Myanmarʼs ambassador for monday meeting: they need to discuss this shooting incident which happened near southern Ranong province. Myanmarʼs military government (which took power almost 4 years ago) hasnt responded to phone calls yet
